    How the calculation works

    Concentration is vial strength divided by diluent volume. A 10 mg vial reconstituted with 2 mL gives 5 mg/mL. The volume containing a target quantity is that quantity divided by the concentration, so 0.5 mg at 5 mg/mL is 0.1 mL — ten units on a syringe graduated at 100 units per millilitre.

    The diluent itself does not change this arithmetic. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol and supports a longer working life than sterile water, which has no preservative, but neither alters the concentration.     How do you calculate peptide reconstitution?

    Divide the vial strength by the diluent volume to get concentration per millilitre. For example, 10 mg of lyophilised peptide reconstituted with 2 mL of bacteriostatic water gives 5 mg/mL. To find the volume containing a target quantity, divide that quantity by the concentration.

    What is the difference between bacteriostatic and sterile water?

    Sterile water contains no preservative. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth and therefore supports a longer working life for a reconstituted solution. The choice affects that working life, not the concentration arithmetic — the calculation is identical either way.

    How many units is 0.25 mL on an insulin syringe?

    Insulin syringes are graduated so that 100 units equals 1 mL. 0.25 mL is therefore 25 units, and 0.1 mL is 10 units. This calculator reports draw volume in both millilitres and units for that reason.

    Does a pre-filled peptide pen need reconstitution?

    No. A pre-filled research pen is supplied in solution at a documented concentration, so there is no reconstitution step and no concentration to derive at the bench. This calculator applies to lyophilised material supplied in vials.
